Amrita Rao donning a bold avatar in the Bollywood movie Short Kut had astounded many. However the actress, who is best recognized for portraying the image of a traditional Indian girl on the silver screen, claims that she is not going for a complete change. The 29-year old actress says that she has no uncertainties in portraying characters that have a variety of shades and her celluloid-image depends on the type of roles that she bags.

Amrita Rao was born on 7 June 1981 in Chitrapur. She is from Saraswat Brahmin Family. She completed schooling from C.G.High School, Mumbai and college from Sophiya College, Mumbai. She took degree in the psychology subject. When she was in college, she gave audition for the advertisement of Fairever Cream and she was selected from sixty contestants. After this advertisement she got many offers and she became model. She also performed in the advertisements of Bru Coffee and Cadbury perk. Because of these three she got offers for Bollywood films.
After graduation, she started to perform in films as an actress and performed first film "Ab Ke Baras" released in 2002. But this film was not unable to do well at box office. Her first block office hit film was "Ishq Vishk" in 2003. She got first nomination for Filmfare Award for this film. Her next hit films were "Masti" and "Main Hoon Naa". Both were released in 2004.
Some of her hit films such as "Deewaar" released in 2004, "Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi" in 2005, "Shikhar" in 2005 and the film "Pyare Mohan" released in 2006. Her popular role was in the film "Vivah" in 2006. This film was directed by Sooraj Barjatya and she performed with Shahid Kapoor. This film was universally successful film. She won Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award for this film.
Amrita also enters into Tollywood and debut film was "Athidhi" which was super hit film. In this film her co-star was Mahesh Babu. Her recent released film was "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" which was flopped on box office. Awards
